This rugged new tour takes us through the remote and starkly beautiful Spiti / Kinnaur & Lahoul Valley. Here, Buddhist Monasteries cling to rocky mountains and scarlet-robed lamas dominate the cultural life of the villages. The soaring peaks of the Himalayas overlook richly cultivated valleys, providing marvelous vistas during our explorations. The tour starts through Hindu dominated towns and villages. Next we have a short trek along the remote Pin Valley and chattering Pin River, passing terraces of peas and barley sprinkled with wild geraniums and poppies. The irrigated fields on the valley flanks give way to barren rocks, topped by a snowcap of hanging glaciers and sharp peaks. We pass tiny villages, cross snowy peaks and rolling meadows in a land inhabited by ibexes and snow leopards. It’s not uncommon to share the way with monks, or the odd vulture above! Darker skinned Hindi speakers inhabit the greener southern slopes, and we can visit the intricately carved Bhimakali Temple, dedicated to the fierce Hindu Goddess Kali. After this stunning hike we drive to Shimla - India's famous hill station and the summer capital of the British Raj.
